MakerBot

Makerbot is a new hobby class 3D Printer. For $750 you can order a kit of parts and build your own 3D Printer. Makerbot uses ABS or PLA plastic and is an FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D Printer, very similar to the RepRap and Fab@Home 3D Printers, which work just like the commercial solutions from Dimension / Stratasys.

Print a bicycle?




A Solido Case Study

Objective: Make a true scale model of a folding bicycle for design testing.
Solution: Print out the entire bicycle part by part using the SD300 printer.
A leading Israeli product development company, Ziv-Av Engineering, decided to use the SD300 Pro Printer to create a folding bicycle for their client. The printed bicycle was going to be a 1:1 scale model that tested the mechanical design prior to starting production. The bicycle was divided into parts, and each part was constructed in sections using the SD300 Pro Sdview software application. Standard commercial adhesives allowed the parts to be made, with the SD300 Pro PVC material simulating aluminum cast strength quite nicely.
The final bicycle parts were assembled and the mechanical design was tested and improved for final production. The whole bicycle was built in less than five days using a single in-house SD300 Pro printer.The development team saved money for the company by building the bicycle in-house with the SD300 Pro printer. They didn't have to re-create the wheel, they just used our printer.

RealView unveils three 3D desktop scanners



We don't see too many 3D scanners 'round these parts, so we'll be excited to hit RealView 3D's booth at CES and see what all the fuss is about. The RealView 360⁰ 3D Desktop Scanner is being billed as the world's first desktop scanner capable of capturing objects in their full 360⁰ topographic glory, suitable for scanning mugs, model space ships, D&D figurines, and whatever else fits on its base. There are three models available: RealView 360 3D (the plain ol' VGA scanner), RealView 360 3D HD (for that hi-def resolution you crave) and RealView 360 HD Commercial (for large format scans and kiosks). Beyond that, we'll just have to wait for CES 2009 to open its doors. Soon.

Reverse Engineering

Reverse Engineering is the process of taking an object or system and finding the technical components like Mechanical CAD data in order to learn how the object or system is made, with the end goal of enhancing or reproducing a physical copy.

First the object must be scanned with a digitizer, and then the large amount of data derived from the scan, must then be manipulated to meet the specifications of the new design. There are three types of scanning processes to choose from: feature-based scanning, usually done with a touch probe, laser scanning with a point-cloud and a mix of the two—hybrid scanning. When looking for a digitizer to scan objects, speed, accuracy and the volume are three major points to consider.

At one point reverse engineering was considered a non-reputable form of design. As with most trends in the CAD world, the hardware and software of reverse engineering are becoming easier to work with, quicker to use and less expensive. It’s an exciting time for reverse engineering with new products and quicker scanning processes being continually developed.
